PV Online Report : World Stroke Day was celebrated by the Neurology Department of Chittagong Medical College (CMC) Hospital. The scientific meeting was held at Shaheed Shah Alam Bir Uttam Auditorium, CMC.

Organized under the slogan ‘Saving precious time’, the main scientific article titled ‘What is innovation in stroke management’ was presented by the head professor of neurology department Md. Hasanuzzaman.

He said, in case of stroke, patients must go to the stroke center for treatment without delay. Because 1.9 million brain cells die every minute after a stroke. It causes permanent brain damage. Every two seconds a person suffers a stroke and every six seconds a patient dies worldwide. The number of stroke patients is also increasing with time. It becomes clear when we look at the statistics of the neurology ward of Chittagong Medical College. Strokes are increasing mainly due to changes in our lifestyle and uncontrolled diabetes, high blood pressure. Although stroke treatment is not 100% curable, it is possible to stay healthy with regular exercise.

He further said that there are two types of stroke. Of these, 86 percent are ischemic strokes and 14 percent are hemorrhagic strokes. Ischemic stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted by a clot in a blood vessel. Hemorrhagic stroke is when a blood vessel in the brain bursts and bleeds. We also need to think about the rehabilitation process of stroke patients. Because stroke treatment is very long term. But now we have started modern treatment in our neurology ward. A stroke can be completely cured with thrombolytic therapy in our ward within 3 hours of the onset of stroke symptoms. All the therapies we have given so far have been 100% successful. Patients are living healthy lives.

CMC Vice Principal Professor Dr. Hafizul Islam presided over the program and among others, Chittagong Medical College Neurology Department Associate Professor Dr. Md. Muhitul Islam, Dr. Pradeep Kumar Kayasthgir, Dr. Shiuli Mazumder, Dr. Panchanan Das, Assistant Professor Dr. Mahbubul Alam Khandkar, Dr. Masihuzzaman Alfa, Dr. Tauhidur Rahman, Anwarul Kibria, Dr. Zaman Ahmed, Dr. Dr. Ekramul Azam Shahed, consultant of neurology department.
