PV Desk : UN Secretary General António Guterres arrived in Dhaka on Sunday (July 1), to visit the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar.
The flight carrying António Guterres landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 2am. Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali welcomed him at the airport.
Sources from the foreign ministry said that the UN secretary general will pay a courtesy call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday.
He will attend a program on UN sustainable development agenda, at the Prime Minister’s Office. Afterwards, he will attend a dinner party hosted by the prime minister, at the night.
António Guterres is scheduled to visit the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi-32, around 12:30pm. In the evening, he will inspect a project titled ‘Generation Breakthrough’ at Holy Cross Girls’ High School in Tejgaon.
He will leave Dhaka for Cox’s Bazar, to visit the Rohingya refugee camps, on Monday morning (July 2). Returning from there, he will address a press briefing in Dhaka, in the evening. Afterwards, he will leave Dhaka, at the night.
However, World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim is also scheduled to arrive here on Sunday, on a two-day visit to inspect the Rohingya situation.
He will sit in discussions with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali and Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith
However, UN Secretary General António Guterres earlier visit Rohingyas in Cox’s Bazar in 2008 while he was serving as the chief of UNHCR.
He earlier called on the world communities to stand against the persecution of Rohingyas, after terming the oppression ‘humanitarian crisis overload’ carried out by the Myanmar army on the Rohingyas.
