PV Online Report : Chittagong’s only modern food laboratory has been closed for 15 months. It was constructed at Bibirhat in the city under the Urban Public and Environmental Health Sector Development Project (UPEHSDP) and handed over to the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) at a cost of about Tk 32 crore from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
Equipment worth more than 10 crore rupees was installed. Six separate labs were created. It is said to be the second modern food laboratory in the country. Last Monday afternoon, it was seen that the main gate was locked. ‘Use alternate door’ is posted on the gate. But even after going to the alternative door, it is also seen to be locked. A shop is being built right in front of this door. But the electricity transmission line passed right above the shop and the gas line passed under the ground.
CCC sources said that in September 2013, the Ministry of Local Government Rural Development and Cooperatives took up the project of setting up a modern food laboratory to ensure safe food. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation stone of the two laboratories built in the areas of Dhaka South City Corporation and Chittagong City Corporation under the UPEHSDP project and funded by ADB on October 12, 2013. Two modern food laboratories were constructed at a cost of Tk 63,87,26,000 in both the cities.
